"The piece is only as good as it works in an outfit." JF I'm not sure why, but everytime I see ads for "The White Shirt" or TWS (sounds like an old airline?) or articles about key wardrobe pieces, and typically, TWS is paired with "the black pencil skirt" or TBS (sounds like a new TV channel?)...this piece just doesn't do it for me. Rarely does TWS look as good in person and on as it does in the magazines. The wrinkle-free ones can look cheap and the cotton ones never look crisp. I know it's mentioned everywhere as a wardrobe basic, but TWS, especially with TBS, just says BLAH! to me. If you say, "But Julie, I really like a crisp, tailored shirt," then here is a way to make the best of it (Just remember, you can still be a wonderful dresser without being "crisp" or "tailored."): Wear TWS with ivory, camel or taupe on the bottom. Add your favorite color shawl, cardigan or jacket. (This fall is favoring red, purple or teal.) Next, wear a fabulous necklace OR belt. Shoes complete the outfit. Flats, heels or booties, and a handbag to coordinate, pull it all together. Now you have an outfit! Isn't this what we really want with our favorite pieces?
My advice...the piece is only as good as it works in an outfit. Otherwise it's just a shirt...in white.
