Dear Julie,
We can all be challenged with maximizing the savings
with the variety of coupon offers available. I've seen an
accelerated trend in more offers, such as higher
percentages and/or dollars off. Even the sales
associates have a hard time keeping track!
Here are some tips
to help you with The Coupon Game or Let's Make a
Deal!
Tip #1:
Have your coupons with
you.
If you're like me, you have a special pocket in your
purse for coupons. A zip lock baggie
works nicely too. When the coupons arrive, either
by mail or by email, I simply put them in their
designated area.
Note: If you've forgotten
your coupons, the sales staff don't always
have an extra one to scan.
Tip #2:
Sort before you
shop.
Take a moment and plan where your shopping, and
which coupons you'll most likely use.
Note: This would be a good time to check the
dates.
Most stores have dates when you can use
your coupons, and when you cannot. However, one
major department store now has coupons with
overlapping dates.
Tip #3:
Do Your Math.
If you're buying several items you may want to
purchase them separately. Why? Sometimes you'll
save more with dollars off, sometimes you'll save
more with percentage. Here's where you want to read
the fine print.
Note: 20% and $20 off a $100 purchase is the
same, but if your purchase is over $100, the 20% is
better.
Tip #4:
In the Fitting
Room.
Once you've made your final selection, take a moment
to double check and make sure that your item(s) are
not "excluded", meaning not eligible. These are the
items in that very, very fine print. It's usually designer
labels and some exclusive store brands.
Note: There are no exceptions to the
exclusions. They
mean it.
I know it sounds early to be planning your holiday
shopping, however, the best discounts of the entire
year happen between now and January 1st. So try to
keep
your wits about you and keep track of those dates!
Happy shopping!
